About Me Booklet

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

Our brilliant artist Ana Graça has produced “About Me” which is a small work book designed to help enable conversations with small children who are young carers. These booklets can be used to help in preparation with assessments for younger young carers who are likely to find formal assessment forms very daunting.

As part of the series of illustrations for the Young Carers Alliance, we created an activity booklet with the intent of helping with preparation for assessments and information-gathering for young carers in early childhood.

Formal assessment processes tend to be difficult for these little children to engage with and so this booklet is designed to provide professionals with a tool to help involve young carers in conversation. It aims to do this by engaging children’s imagination, to break the ice and help them open up and talk about their caring situations.

The booklet includes colouring activities and prompts for children to answer in words or with drawings. It aims to help primary school teachers, health care professionals, researchers, and social workers as a tool to facilitate the dialogue with young children.

We are starting to test the use of this booklet (and slight variations of it) in various settings in Kingston upon Thames. It has also been translated into Japanese and is currently being used by some organizations in Japan, like Nagosib.

This resource is being showered with praise from around the world and has already been translated into Japanese.

“It is wonderful, soft and kind” - from Japan

‘This is so sweet I’m nearly crying. I wish we had this kind of visibility and loving support for our #YoungCarer s #JungePflegende in 🇩🇪.” - from a German carer

These can also be viewed online and downloaded from Ana’s portfolio website . This includes a version that enables people to add their own local logos when printing it to use as part of their own assessment processes.
